Feeling frustrated that your employee still has back pain despite providing them with expensive ergonomic equipment?

It is completely understandable to feel frustrated. You’ve invested time, effort, and money into ergonomic adjustments, and seeing an employee still struggle with back pain can make it feel like your efforts are hitting a brick wall. However, persistent back pain when ergonomics “fail” is very common. Even the most advanced ergonomic set-up cannot solve chronic back pain on its own if underlying behavioural or systemic issues are at play.

The “Static Loading” Trap (Lack of Movement)The human body is designed for movement, not static positions. Even if a worker is sitting in a perfectly adjusted, high-end chair, staying in that exact position for hours causes static loading. The tissues supporting the spine fatigue and restrict blood flow, leading to pain. Movement and exercise are the most research-endorsed interventions for chronic back pain. So instead of providing your employee with a chair that adjusts in every way possible to support a ‘perfect’ static posture, have them try active sitting on a SpinaliS chair instead, which encourages constant micromovements and muscle activation. In addition, encourage a work culture where taking brief, active breaks (standing up, walking around, or doing light stretches for 2 minutes every half hour) is normal and expected. It is also advisable to encourage lunchtime walks, exercise classes, promote cycling to work etc. to increase the overall activity levels of your employees.

Consider also the role of workplace stress on chronic pain. Stress is a major contributing factor to chronic back pain. High workload pressures, tight deadlines, and job dissatisfaction trigger involuntary muscle tension, particularly in the neck, shoulders, and lower back. When an employee is highly stressed, their nervous system amplifies and can even self-generate pain signals, making standard ergonomic fixes practically useless. Exercise can help mitigate the effects of stress on the nervous system, but the stressors obviously need addressing as well.
